Anyone watching Glenda preparing her hanging baskets and summer containers during May could be forgiven for thinking that she is a contender for the Britain in Bloom competition. It takes the plants of two full greenhouses to supply her with a sufficient number of plants for all the arrangements she sets out to complete. Most of the plants used are half hardy perennials which are moved from overwintering in the greenhouses to be replanted and made up ready for the summer season. The containers hosting the more mature plants and shrubs are either repotted or top dressed and the plants designed for hanging baskets are carefully inspected especially for the vine weevil larvae. With careful handling most of the plants survive year upon year and they only need replacing when they become too big or too woody. Of course new stock is regularly introduced in the form of rooted cuttings or young plants grown from seed. Glenda also keeps numerous containerized shrubs and bushes growing outside throughout the year which bring, especially to the winter months, variety, colour and impact at a time when they are very much needed. Glenda sets up her hanging baskets mid June and they remain in position until the autumn.
